Death of Charlie Dalin: France Mourns an Extraordinary Sailor

Paris – 11.06.2026: The French offshore sailor Charlie Dalin has died. The winner of the 2024/2025 Vendée Globe passed away on the night of June 11 in Quimper at the age of 42 due to the effects of a long-standing cancer illness. He was diagnosed with a gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) more than two and a half years ago, but until the very end, Dalin fought tirelessly – both at sea and in life.

Born on May 10, 1984, in Le Havre, Dalin was one of the most influential sailors of his generation. After studying naval architecture at the University of Southampton, he began his career in the single-handed Solitaire du Figaro race before making a name for himself in the IMOCA class. His crowning achievement was the Vendée Globe, the toughest solo around-the-world sailing race, which he completed with a record time of 64 days, 19 hours, 22 minutes, and 49 seconds.

Despite the serious illness, Dalin still took part in the Transat Jacques-Vabre in autumn 2023. In an interview with the sports newspaper “L’Équipe,” he revealed that he completed the Vendée Globe despite having a tumor the size of a grapefruit in his abdomen. “Sport helped me fight the illness,” he said at the time.

His wife Perrine Le Pape confirmed her husband’s death with moving words: “It is with deepest sadness that our family announces the loss of Charlie Dalin after a long illness.” She asked the public to respect the family’s privacy and announced that tributes for Dalin would be planned in the coming days.

France’s President Emmanuel Macron honored Dalin as “an immeasurable sailor, with rare courage, a light at sea.” These words summarize the appreciation Dalin received not only as an athlete but also as a person. Many in the sailing world mourn a skipper whose passion and fighting spirit were exemplary.

Besides his wife Perrine, Charlie Dalin leaves behind their six-year-old son Oscar. The sailing community and all of France bid farewell to an extraordinary athlete whose legacy radiates far beyond the sport. His story remains a testament to courage, endurance, and the strength to never give up even in difficult times.

Charlie Dalin will be remembered as one of France’s outstanding sailors – a man who inspired generations with his achievements and character, and who became the face of modern solo classic sailing for many.
