France: Fruits and Vegetables Resist Inflation

In France, fruits and vegetables are able to withstand inflationary pressures. At market stalls, especially zucchinis are 47 cents cheaper compared to 2022. How can this be explained?

At the market stalls in Bessières (Haute-Garonne), fruits and vegetables have resisted inflation. According to the latest survey, the prices of some French fruits and vegetables have even decreased compared to 2022. For example, zucchinis are 47 cents cheaper. Early-season strawberries (Gariguettes) are also a few cents cheaper than last year. A lady assured France 2: “Strawberries have not become more expensive, they are as expensive as last year.” The reason for price stability can be attributed to the mild spring weather.

Fragile situation
After two years of frost damage, farmers feel relieved this year. A fruit grower assured: “There was no frost; our region will have more fruit.” Average prices remain unchanged or have slightly fallen. A supermarket customer remarked: “Gariguette strawberries are still quite expensive.” Expert Olivier Dauvers believes this situation may not last. A worrying factor for farmers is the drought in Spain. If France’s water resources also become scarce, this will affect prices.
