Paris – 06/12/2026: Patrick Bruel, the well-known French singer and actor, is facing serious charges. After 48 hours in police custody, the 67-year-old was presented to several investigating judges on June 10, 2026, in Nanterre. He is accused of rape, attempted rape, sexual coercion, and sexual harassment. The allegations refer to alleged incidents that took place between 2008 and 2019, reportedly not only in France but also in Belgium and Switzerland.
Bruel denies all allegations and has been released under strict conditions. These include travel restrictions, bans on contact with the alleged victims, mandatory psychological treatment, and the posting of a 500,000 euro bail. Further investigations are ongoing, including into older allegations that may potentially be time-barred.
Bruel’s lawyer, Myriam Guedj Benayoun, stated that her client rejects all accusations and is determined to prove his innocence. She also pointed out that the decision by the investigating judges to release Bruel under strict conditions despite the seriousness of the charges is a signal to victims of sexual assault, whose voices often go unheard.
The accusations cover various cases, including an alleged rape in 2008 in Neuilly-sur-Seine, an attempted rape in 2010 in Brussels, as well as accusations of sexual coercion and harassment from 2019 in Perpignan and Ajaccio. Bruel is also involved as a so-called “assisted witness” in four additional investigations, meaning he is not charged but is included in the inquiries.
The public reaction to the indictment is clearly noticeable. Bruel, who achieved great success especially in the 1980s and 1990s with songs like “Casser la voix” and “Place des grands hommes,” has already canceled all planned performances in France and internationally for the coming months. He intends to fully focus on the legal proceedings.
In recent years, the French judiciary has increasingly acted against sexual offenses, particularly in the cultural and entertainment sectors. The #MeToo movement has played an important role by encouraging many victims to come forward and pursue criminal prosecution. The investigations into Bruel take place within this societal context and raise questions about power relations and how assaults are handled in the entertainment industry.
French authorities have announced that they will advance the investigations as a high priority to do justice to both the alleged victims and the accused. The development of this high-profile case remains a matter of close attention both within the cultural sector and among the public.
