Fruits and vegetables are withstanding inflation in France. In particular, at market stalls, pumpkins have become 47 cents cheaper compared to 2022. How can this be explained?
At the Bessières (Haute-Garonne) market stalls, they are defying inflation. According to a recent survey, prices of some French fruits and vegetables have actually decreased compared to 2022. For example, pumpkins are 47 cents cheaper. Early strawberries (Gariguette) have also dropped by a few cents compared to the previous year. A woman confidently stated in an interview with France 2, “The price of strawberries has not increased. It is the same price as last year.” This stable pricing is explained by the mild spring weather.
Unstable situation
After two years of frost damage, producers are happy this year. One orchard farmer was confident, “There was no frost. We will harvest much more fruit in our region.” Average prices are unchanged or slightly lower. A supermarket customer lamented, “Gariguette strawberries are still quite expensive.” According to expert Olivier Dauvers, this situation might not last long. One reason producers are concerned is the drought in Spain. If water shortages occur in France as well, it would affect prices.
