In France, fruits and vegetables resist inflation. At market stalls, particularly zucchinis are 47 cents cheaper compared to 2022. How can this be explained?
At the market stalls in Bessières (Haute-Garonne) they are defying inflation. According to the latest surveys, the prices of some French fruits and vegetables have even decreased compared to 2022. For example, zucchinis are down by 47 cents. The first strawberries (Gariguettes) have also lost a few cents compared to last year. “The strawberry has not increased in price. It is just as expensive as last year,” a woman tells France 2. Stable prices can be explained by the mild spring weather.
A fragile situation
After two years of frost damage, producers are happy this year. “There were no frosts. We will have many more fruits in our region,” says a fruit grower. Average prices remain the same or are even slightly lower. “Gariguette strawberries are still quite expensive,” laments a customer in a supermarket. According to expert Olivier Dauvers, the situation may not be long-lasting. One concern for producers is the drought in Spain. If water is also scarce in France, this will affect prices.
