Second Heatwave in Dax: Temperatures Reach 34 Degrees

Dax, France – 14.06.2026: Today, the city of Dax, located in the Landes department in southwestern France, is experiencing the second heatwave of the year. Temperatures are once again reaching peak values of up to 34 degrees Celsius. This exceptional period of heat represents a significant burden for both the people and nature in the region. Following the first heatwave in April 2026, which already caused unusually high temperatures across much of France, the hot weather continues. Especially in Landes and the neighboring Gironde, temperature deviations of more than 16 degrees above average were recorded back then. This recurring heat event reinforces concerns about climate development and its local consequences. The high temperatures are leading to accelerated drying out of the soils and a severe moisture deficit, which currently amounts to up to 45 percent in Gironde. Agricultural yields are thus endangered as plants suffer from water shortages. Natural ecosystems are also increasingly stressed, which can impact biodiversity. Many residents report limiting everyday leisure activities, such as visiting beaches or parks, due to the intense heat. Concerns about the environment as well as health risks are fostering growing awareness about coping with the effects of climate change. Experts from Météo-France and La Chaîne Météo warn that further heatwaves are expected in the coming months. They emphasize the need for consistent adaptation measures to be implemented both at the municipal and national levels. These include, for example, improving urban infrastructure, promoting sustainable irrigation techniques, and concrete emergency plans to best protect the population. The repeated heat phases in southwestern France highlight the urgency of decisively addressing climate change. Only through active countermeasures can the risks to humans, nature, and the economy be reduced and the resilience of the region strengthened. For this afternoon, temperatures in Dax are expected to rise further and reach 34 degrees Celsius by evening. Meteorologists strongly advise avoiding outdoor exertion, drinking plenty of water, and paying special attention to vulnerable groups such as the elderly and children. This event once again makes clear how important it is to prepare for the long-term consequences of a changing climate and to establish effective protective measures to safeguard the quality of life in Dax and the entire region.
