G7 Summit in Évian: Massive Security Measures and Protests in Geneva

Évian-les-Bains – June 15, 2026: From June 15 to 17, 2026, the heads of state and government of the seven leading industrial nations will gather in Évian-les-Bains, France, for the G7 Summit. To ensure the safety of this significant international meeting, the French authorities have implemented extensive and tightly coordinated security measures. In total, around 16,000 personnel are deployed, including police officers, gendarmes, military personnel, firefighters, and border guards. Additionally, drones, anti-terror units, and special forces for combating cyber threats are deployed for protection. 1,000 French soldiers support the security forces on site. The secured zone covers 1,670 square kilometers, with certain areas closed to the public.

These comprehensive security measures respond not only to the overall importance of the summit but also to current international tensions and specific threats posed by acts of sabotage and cyberattacks. Authorities are also preparing for possible public unrest related to the summit’s political topics.

Immediately before the start of the summit, numerous protests are taking place in the neighboring Swiss city of Geneva. On Sunday, several thousand demonstrators gathered for a protest march organized by an alliance of around 60 organizations. The march began shortly after 3:15 p.m. in Parc Mon Repos. The protesters criticized, among other things, US President Donald Trump’s policies toward Iran, the lack of climate protection, and social inequality. Some riots led to property damage, including the torching of a Tesla electric car and the smashing of bank windows.

In response to the protests, Swiss authorities have tightened border controls and closed most border crossings. Public spaces such as parks in Geneva are closed, and many stores barricaded their windows. These measures recall the preparations made during the 2003 G8 Summit to prevent similar damage.

Besides security, important topics are on the agenda at the G7 Summit in Évian: In addition to the Middle East conflict, the situation in Ukraine, and climate change, discussions will include the regulation of artificial intelligence and the promotion of balanced global economic growth.

The strict security measures and protests in Geneva reflect the high expectations and tensions associated with the summit. Authorities in France and Switzerland are working closely together to conduct the event safely while simultaneously ensuring the right to peaceful expression of opinion.

The 2026 G7 Summit in Évian-les-Bains is therefore not only a significant diplomatic event but also a focal point of intense political disputes and public mobilization.
