Fleurance – 16.06.2026: The tragedy of 11-year-old Lyhanna, who disappeared at the end of May 2026 in Fleurance in southwestern France and whose body was found in early June, has sparked a debate about the effectiveness of the French justice system. At the center is Jérôme Barella, the main suspect in the murder case, against whom warning signs had emerged months earlier.
A particular case was documented in March 2026: at that time, a report of “inappropriate behavior” towards another girl was filed with the public prosecutor’s office in Auch. Despite this report, no thorough investigation or questioning of the accused took place. This inaction again raises the question of why earlier warning signs were ignored.
Barella first appeared in police databases in 2017 after a case involving a concerning relationship with a minor was reported. In 2021, he was expelled from a school due to inappropriate behavior towards a female student. However, these incidents were not reported to the relevant authorities, preventing further legal consequences.
In October 2022, another victim filed the first formal rape complaint against Barella. Additional reports followed in 2025 and early 2026. Despite incriminating psychological assessments, the investigations were significantly delayed, partly due to poor communication among the involved institutions.
The public prosecutor’s office in Auch only began serious investigations in January 2026 after a further report of sexual assault was submitted. The fact that Barella was not questioned until then is sharply criticized by victims, relatives, and the public.
Lyhanna’s family is deeply disappointed by the failures. Rosa, the mother of another victim, has filed a lawsuit against the French state and Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin because her complaint filed in August 2025 was ignored for months.
In light of public outrage, the government has launched two independent investigations to uncover mistakes in handling the case. Gérald Darmanin publicly apologized and announced possible sanctions against responsible parties. President Emmanuel Macron and Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu are calling for comprehensive reforms in the justice system to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
The affair sparked nationwide protests: thousands demonstrated in front of courthouses demanding fundamental improvements in the handling of sexual abuse cases and stronger support for victims. The justice system is under pressure to regain trust and hold those responsible accountable.
Investigations into the circumstances of the case and the role of the authorities are ongoing. The public expects a thorough clarification and a consistent reform of the system to prevent further tragic cases.
