Case Lyhanna: Warning signs against Jérôme Barella in March 2026

Fleurance – 16.06.2026: The tragedy of Lyhanna, an 11-year-old girl who disappeared at the end of May 2026 in Fleurance, in southwestern France, and whose body was found at the beginning of June, has sparked a debate about the effectiveness of the French judicial system. The focus is on Jérôme Barella, the main suspect in the murder, against whom warning signs had existed for months.

A particular case was documented in March 2026: at that time, a complaint of “inappropriate conduct” towards another girl was filed with the Auch prosecutor’s office. Despite this report, no investigation or interrogation of the accused was carried out. This inaction again raises the question of why previous warning signs were ignored.

Barella first appeared in police databases in 2017, after a case of a concerning relationship with a minor was reported. In 2021, he was expelled from a school for inappropriate behavior towards a female student. However, these incidents were not reported to the competent authorities, which prevented further legal consequences.

In October 2022, another victim filed the first formal complaint of rape against Barella. More complaints followed in 2025 and early 2026. Despite compelling psychological reports, investigations were significantly delayed, partly due to a lack of communication between the institutions involved.

The Auch prosecutor’s office did not start serious investigations until January 2026, after receiving a new alert about sexual abuse. The fact that Barella was not interrogated until that time has been heavily criticized by the victims, their families, and public opinion.

Lyhanna’s family is deeply disappointed by the failures. Rosa, mother of another victim, has filed a lawsuit against the French state and the Minister of Justice Gérald Darmanin, as her complaint filed in August 2025 was ignored for months.

In response to public outrage, the government has launched two independent investigations to uncover errors in handling the case. Gérald Darmanin offered a public apology and announced possible sanctions against those responsible. President Emmanuel Macron and Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu are demanding deep reforms in justice to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

The case provoked nationwide protests: thousands demonstrated in front of courts demanding a fundamental improvement in the handling of sexual abuse cases and greater support for victims. Justice is under pressure to regain trust and hold those responsible accountable.

Investigations into the circumstances of the case and the role of the authorities continue. Public opinion expects a thorough clarification and consequent reform of the system to prevent future tragic cases.
