Fleurance – 16.06.2026: The tragedy of 11-year-old Lyhanna, who disappeared at the end of May 2026 in Fleurance in the southwest of France and whose body was found at the beginning of June, has sparked a debate about the effectiveness of the French judicial system. At the center of the case is Jérôme Barella, the main suspect in the murder, against whom warning signs had already emerged months earlier.
A particular case dates back to March 2026: on that occasion a complaint was filed for “inappropriate behavior” against another girl at the Auch public prosecutor’s office. Despite this complaint, no consistent investigations were initiated nor was the suspect’s testimony heard. This inactivity raises again the question of why the previous warning signs were ignored.
Barella had already appeared in police databases in 2017, after a concerning relationship with a minor was reported. In 2021 he was expelled from a school for inappropriate behavior towards a student. However, these incidents were not communicated to the competent authorities, preventing further legal consequences.
In October 2022 another victim filed the first formal complaint of rape against Barella. Additional complaints followed in 2025 and early 2026. Despite compromising psychological evaluations, the investigations significantly slowed down, partly due to poor communication between the involved institutions.
The Auch public prosecutor’s office only started serious investigations in January 2026, following another report of sexual abuse. The fact that Barella was not questioned until that time was harshly criticized by victims, families, and public opinion.
Lyhanna’s family is deeply disappointed by the shortcomings found. Rosa, the mother of another victim, filed a complaint against the French State and Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin, since her report made in August 2025 remained ignored for months.
Following public outrage, the government launched two independent investigations to identify possible errors in the handling of the case. Gérald Darmanin publicly apologized and announced possible sanctions against those responsible. President Emmanuel Macron and Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu are calling for profound judicial reforms to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
The scandal has triggered protests across the nation: thousands of people demonstrated in front of courts demanding better handling of sexual abuse cases and greater support for victims. The justice system is under pressure to regain trust and to ensure accountability for those who had decision-making roles.
Investigations into the circumstances of the case and the role of the authorities are still ongoing. Public opinion expects a full clarification and systematic reform to avoid new tragic cases.
