Leanna Incident: Early Warning Signs for Jerome Barrera in March 2026

Florence – June 16, 2026: The tragedy of 11-year-old girl Leanna has sparked discussions about the effectiveness of the French judicial system. Leanna disappeared at the end of May 2026 in southwestern France, Florence, and her body was found in early June. Jérôme Barrera is the main suspect in the murder case, with warning signs appearing months earlier.

A special case occurred in March 2026: at that time, a report was submitted to the Auch prosecutor’s office regarding Barrera’s “misconduct” toward another girl. Despite this report, no thorough investigation or questioning of the suspect was conducted. This inaction has again raised questions about why early warnings were ignored.

Barrera first appeared in the police database in 2017, when there were concerning reports involving minors. In 2021, he was expelled from school for inappropriate behavior toward a female student. However, these events were not reported to the relevant authorities, preventing further judicial action.

In October 2022, another victim formally accused Barrera of rape for the first time. More reports followed in 2025 and early 2026. Despite psychological assessments supporting the accusations, the investigation was severely delayed due to poor communication between relevant agencies.

It was not until January 2026 that the Auch prosecutor’s office began a serious investigation due to new clues about sexual assault. The fact that Barrera had not been questioned previously has been heavily criticized by victims, their families, and the public.

Leanna’s family is deeply disappointed by the judicial failures. The mother of another victim, Rosa, filed a lawsuit accusing the French state and Justice Minister Gérard Darmanin of long-term neglect of the report submitted in August 2025.

In view of public outrage, the government launched two independent investigations to uncover the errors in case handling. Gérard Darmanin publicly apologized and announced possible sanctions against responsible agencies. President Emmanuel Macron and Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu called for comprehensive reforms of the judicial system to prevent similar tragedies from happening again.

The incident sparked nationwide protests, with thousands gathering in front of courts demanding thorough improvements in handling sexual abuse cases and enhanced support for victims. The judicial system faces pressure to regain trust and ensure accountability.

The investigation of the case and the roles of relevant departments is still ongoing. The public expects a thorough inquiry and systemic reforms to prevent further tragedies in the future.
