Peace Agreement Between the USA and Iran: Trump Announces Deal Amid Skepticism and Unresolved Issues

Paris – 16.06.2026: U.S. President Donald Trump announced on June 14, 2026, the conclusion of a peace agreement with Iran, which includes the reopening of the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, as well as the lifting of the U.S. Navy’s maritime blockade that had lasted several months. This agreement is intended to end the conflict between the two countries, which has been ongoing for 106 days, and to ensure safe passage for oil tankers through the strait. The formal signing is scheduled for June 19, 2026, in Switzerland.

Despite the positive start, many key issues remain unanswered. A senior Iranian official stated that the final agreement, in addition to passage through the Strait of Hormuz, will also regulate Iran’s nuclear program and the phased lifting of U.S. sanctions on oil exports. Both parties aim to reach a more comprehensive agreement within 60 days of mutual consent.

However, critics point out that the preliminary agreement does not address the main contentious issues. In particular, it concerns Iran’s ballistic missile technologies and the country’s role in regional proxy conflicts. Moreover, it remains unclear under what conditions and within what timeframe U.S. sanctions will be lifted. Governments and experts warn that the implementation of the agreement may be challenging.

Israel expresses skepticism regarding the planned peace treaty. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu emphasized that Israel will continue to independently protect its security interests. He doubts that the agreement can sustain regional peace for a long time. Therefore, the agreement is also under close scrutiny from a regional perspective.

Within Iranian society, there is a tense combination of hope and caution. Many remember the unilateral U.S. withdrawal from the nuclear deal in 2018. Others view the agreement as a potential diplomatic achievement for Iran that could reduce international isolation and economic pressure.

The coming weeks will show whether this preliminary agreement can serve as a foundation for lasting peace. Equally important will be its consequences for security in the Middle East and the stability of global energy markets. Experts advise closely monitoring the agreement, as many details and concrete steps remain uncertain, which will significantly affect its success.

The special importance of the Strait of Hormuz as a transit route for about one-fifth of the world’s oil exports makes the situation important for the global economy as well. The end of the blockade could influence energy prices and reduce geopolitical tension if successfully implemented. At the same time, the region remains one of the most complex and unstable in the world – numerous challenges and conflicts of interest will continue to create political pressure that may complicate the peace process.
