USA-Iran Peace Agreement: Trump Announces Conclusion Amid Skepticism and Open Questions

Paris – 16.06.2026: United States President Donald Trump announced on June 14, 2026, a peace agreement with Iran, which foresees the reopening of the strategic Strait of Hormuz and the lifting of the US naval blockade that has been in place for months. This agreement is expected to end the 106-day conflict between the two countries and ensure the safe passage of oil tankers through the strait. The formal signing is scheduled for June 19, 2026, in Switzerland.

Despite the positive start, many central issues remain open. A senior Iranian official stated that the final agreement should regulate, in addition to the transit through the Strait of Hormuz, also the Iranian nuclear program and the gradual lifting of US sanctions on oil exports. Both parties aim to negotiate a broader agreement within 60 days of mutual approval.

However, critics emphasize that the preliminary agreement does not address essential controversial points. In particular, Iran’s ballistic missile technology and the country’s role in regional proxy conflicts remain excluded. Furthermore, it is unclear under what conditions and within what timeframe the US sanctions will be removed. Governments and experts warn that implementation may remain difficult.

Israel is skeptical about the planned peace treaty. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stressed that Israel will continue to defend its security interests independently. He doubts that the agreement can guarantee lasting peace in the region. For this reason, the convention is also viewed critically from a regional perspective.

Among the Iranian population, there is a tense mix of hope and caution. Many remember the unilateral US resolution of the nuclear agreement in 2018. Others consider the agreement a potential diplomatic success for Iran, capable of reducing international isolation and economic pressure.

The coming weeks will tell whether this preliminary agreement can serve as a basis for a definitive peace. Its consequences for security in the Middle East and the stability of global energy markets will also be essential. Experts advise following the agreement closely, as many details and concrete steps still need to be defined and will be decisive for success.

The particular importance of the Strait of Hormuz as a transit route for about one-fifth of the world’s crude oil trade makes the situation relevant for the global economy as well. The end of the blockade could affect energy prices and reduce geopolitical tensions if implementation is effective. However, the region remains one of the most complex and unstable in the world: numerous challenges and conflicts of interest will continue to generate political pressures that could hamper the peace process.
