Fire Alert in Vendée: Around 80 Hectares of Vegetation Burned in Just One Day

Vendée experienced an especially challenging day on Monday, June 15, 2026. Under the oppressive early summer heat, numerous vegetation and field fires broke out across the entire département. Within a few hours, emergency services had to combat nearly thirty different fire outbreaks. The flames consumed a total of around 80 hectares of vegetation and created tense situations in many places.

Many municipalities were affected, including Les Sables-d’Olonne, Mouchamps, Coëx, Venansault, Aubigny-les-Clouzeaux, Bazoges-en-Paillers, and Le Poiré-sur-Vie. The particular challenge for the fire brigade was not only the number of fires but especially their distribution across the entire département. While firefighting efforts were underway in one location, another fire was already reported.

For the firefighters, this meant operations on multiple fronts simultaneously. Numerous firefighters were engaged throughout the day. They were supported by additional forces from the neighboring département Maine-et-Loire. Specialized firefighting vehicles for vegetation and forest fires were also deployed to prevent further spread of the flames.

The current weather situation plays a crucial role. In parts of Vendée, temperatures climbed above 30 degrees Celsius. At the same time, the vegetation in many places is already severely dried out. Grasses, fields, and forest edges under such conditions become bona fide tinder. A single spark is enough, and within minutes a fire spreads. Anyone who has experienced a dry summer in the countryside knows this scene: nature appears peaceful but carries a significant risk at such moments.

Authorities are therefore monitoring the development very closely. High temperatures are also expected in the coming days. The combination of heat, dryness, and possibly strengthening winds could favor further fires. Accordingly, the warnings to the public are very urgent.

Open flames near forests and fields should be strictly avoided. Carelessly discarded cigarette butts can also have devastating consequences. Emergency services advise that at the first signs of smoke, people should immediately inform the fire brigade. Quick action often determines whether a small fire can be quickly extinguished or develops into a large-scale blaze.

Vendée is considered particularly vulnerable to forest and vegetation fires due to its extensive forests, numerous holiday resorts, and the proximity between natural areas and residential buildings. With the start of the summer season, the number of visitors also increases significantly. Responsible behavior toward nature remains all the more important in the coming weeks.
