Train from Paris to Clermont-Ferrand Delayed by Nearly Eight Hours

Paris – 15.06.2026: On Monday, June 15, 2026, an extraordinary delay occurred on the Paris–Clermont-Ferrand train route. Intercités train 5951 departed as scheduled at 6:57 a.m. from Paris Bercy station and was supposed to arrive in Clermont-Ferrand at 10:31 a.m. Shortly before Gien in the Loiret department, the train came to a stop due to a locomotive failure—a sudden technical defect that made continuation impossible.

Despite immediate attempts to resolve the cause remotely, the situation proved more complicated than expected. A complete replacement of the locomotive was necessary, significantly extending the delay. The train’s arrival was postponed until 2:30 p.m., resulting in a delay of 7 hours and 40 minutes.

For the 289 passengers, this meant a long wait under partly extreme conditions: temperatures climbed over 30 degrees Celsius while there was no air conditioning on the train and no access to sanitary facilities. Some passengers reported evacuating the train in the rural surroundings to escape the heat. The situation caused considerable discomfort and frustration.

SNCF responded promptly by guaranteeing compensation to affected passengers amounting to 200% of the ticket price. This regulation is part of the punctuality guarantee Ponctualité INTERCITÉS, effective since March 2024, which applies on the Paris – Clermont-Ferrand and Paris – Limoges – Toulouse routes. The measure underscores the railway company’s effort to satisfy customers despite infrastructure problems.

The Paris – Clermont-Ferrand route has long been known for technical problems and delays. Already in October 2024, commuters and local politicians pointed out the need to modernize the route. The infrastructure is considered outdated, frequently causing operational disruptions and extended travel times. The recent breakdown illustrates the ongoing challenge of improving reliability on this important connection.

SNCF announced a thorough investigation into the causes of the locomotive defect and plans additional measures to enhance operational safety and punctuality.
