Lyon – 16.06.2026: After a legal battle of five years, the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, led by President Fabrice Pannekoucke, has finally published the expense reports of Laurent Wauquiez for the years 2021 to 2023. This decision follows a court order from the administrative court in Lyon, which obliged the region to release the documents.
The publication includes approximately 7,000 pages of detailed expenditure documents, which are now accessible to the public. To analyze the extensive documents, about 500 volunteers have come forward to examine the data for irregularities and potential abuses. This initiative aims to increase transparency in the use of public funds and strengthen citizens’ trust in the regional government.
Critics, however, accuse the region of deliberately delaying the publication of the expense reports to avoid possible scandals. They argue that the late disclosure creates the impression that the region tried to withhold information that is important to the public. These concerns were expressed by the anti-corruption organization Anticor, which had repeatedly called on the region to release the documents.
The publication of the expense reports is part of a broader effort to bring more transparency to the regional government. Earlier, the administrative court in Lyon had already ordered the region to release information about the so-called “Dîner des Sommets” of Laurent Wauquiez, a controversial dinner that cost more than 100,000 euros in 2022.
Despite this progress, the issue of transparency in the use of public funds remains a widely discussed topic in the region. Citizens and political observers still demand a more comprehensive insight into expenditures and stricter control over public funds to strengthen trust in the regional government.
The current developments also shed light on the role of Laurent Wauquiez, who, after his election as deputy of Haute-Loire in September 2024, still exerts influence on regional policy as a “special advisor.” This position, which does not have a clearly defined legal basis, allows him to actively participate in regional politics and influence public events.
The ongoing discussion about transparency and accountability in the regional government of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes emphasizes the importance of open and responsible management of public funds. It remains to be seen what further steps will be taken to strengthen citizens’ trust in the regional government and to avoid future controversy.
All in all, the case of Laurent Wauquiez and the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region shows how important it is for public institutions to act transparently and responsibly to maintain citizens’ trust and to safeguard the integrity of governance.
