Emmanuel Macron Discusses International Situation after G7 Summit in Évian in Interview on France 2

Paris – 17.06.2026: France’s President Emmanuel Macron will give a detailed interview on June 18 in the television program “L’Evenement” on France 2 about the current international situation. The conversation takes place immediately after the G7 summit in Évian-les-Bains, which was held from June 15 to 17, 2026, in the town on Lake Geneva.

The summit brought together the heads of state and government of the seven leading industrialized nations: Germany, France, Canada, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Additionally, representatives of the European Union as well as invited partner countries such as Egypt, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates participated. The session served to discuss urgent global challenges.

The core of the discussions focused on the political situation in the Middle East, particularly efforts to de-escalate for the reopening of the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, which is crucial for the global oil transport. President Macron reaffirmed the need for a peaceful solution and invited the involved states to intensify diplomatic talks to reduce tensions.

Another key focus of the meeting was support for Ukraine in the ongoing conflict with Russia. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also took part to strengthen the solidarity of Western states and deepen common defense strategies.

However, the summit also revealed differences among the participants. Especially the relations between Macron and U.S. President Donald Trump appeared strained, not least because of Trump’s announcement of possible tariffs on France’s digital tax. Despite these differences, Macron sought to continue involving Trump in a cooperative process to create a common basis on international issues.

During his final term, Macron pursues an active foreign policy. He intends to establish France as a central mediator role in global conflicts and relies on a “third diplomatic route” that expands cooperation with medium-sized powers such as Canada, India, and Brazil. This concept aims to help address global challenges like security risks, climate change, and economic inequalities more effectively.

Security measures at the summit were extraordinarily extensive: 16,000 security personnel were stationed around Évian-les-Bains to ensure the protection of all participants and to prevent potential protests or attack attempts. This underscored the political significance of the meeting.

In the joint interview with France 2, Macron is expected to present detailed results of the summit and explain his vision for France’s foreign policy in the coming years. The program promises important insights into the international situation and current diplomatic challenges.
