JR's "Caverne" on the Pont-Neuf bridge reopens to the public after emergency repairs

Paris – 17.06.2026: The giant artwork “La Caverne du Pont-Neuf” by French street artist JR has reopened to the public after a series of major repair works. Originally scheduled to open on June 6, 2026, the opening date was postponed to June 15 due to damage caused by strong winds and heavy rain.

The work transforms the 17th-century Pont-Neuf bridge into an impressive artificial cave 18 meters high and 120 meters long. It consists of 80 air-filled arches, made by more than 800 people in France. The project was funded through the sale of JR’s artworks as well as private sponsors.

Visitors can enter the “Caverne” 24/7 daily until June 28, 2026. This immersive experience is complemented by sounds designed by Thomas Bangalter, former member of Daft Punk, and a special scent reminiscent of the smell of earth after rain.

JR, famous for his large-scale public artworks, drew inspiration for this project from the wrapping of the Pont-Neuf bridge by Christo and Jeanne-Claude in 1985. “La Caverne” is a tribute to this historic event and invites visitors to explore Paris’s oldest bridge in a new and engaging way.

The work is an engineering masterpiece built directly on the Pont-Neuf bridge without using nails or screws in order to preserve the historical value of the bridge. It was entirely produced in France and showcases the breakthrough creativity of the French artistic community.

Although initially delayed due to bad weather, the “Caverne” has attracted many visitors who appreciate the unique atmosphere and artistic concept of the work. It is an opportunity to rediscover the connection between art, history, and architecture in Paris.

The project is part of an increasing number of temporary artworks in the French capital aimed at creatively using public space and generating new forms of cultural and historical transmission. “Caverne” complements diverse destinations along the Seine River, attracting millions of tourists and locals annually.
