JR’s “Caverna” at the Pont-Neuf accessible again after urgent repairs

Paris – 17 June 2026: The monumental art installation “La Caverne du Pont-Neuf” by French street artist JR is once again accessible to the public after extensive repair work. Originally planned for 6 June 2026, the opening had to be postponed to 15 June due to damage caused by strong winds and rain.

The installation transforms the Pont-Neuf, built in the 17th century, into an impressive artificial cave 18 metres high and 120 metres long. It consists of 80 air-filled arches and was produced by more than 800 people in France. The project was financed through the sale of JR’s artworks and private sponsors.

Visitors can enter the “Cave” daily, 24 hours a day, until 28 June 2026. The immersive experience is complemented by a soundscape created by Thomas Bangalter, former member of Daft Punk, and a specially developed scent reminiscent of the smell of earth after rain.

JR, known for his large-scale public works, drew inspiration for this project from the wrapping of the Pont-Neuf carried out in 1985 by Christo and Jeanne-Claude. “La Caverne” is a tribute to this historic event and invites visitors to discover Paris’s oldest bridge in a new and fascinating way.

The installation is a technical masterpiece built directly on the Pont-Neuf without nails or screws in order to protect the bridge’s historical value. It was manufactured entirely in France and demonstrates the innovative capacity of the French art scene.

Despite the initial delays caused by bad weather, the “Cave” has already attracted numerous visitors who appreciate the installation’s unique atmosphere and artistic concept. It offers an opportunity to rediscover the connection between art, history and architecture in Paris.

The project is part of a growing number of temporary art installations in the French capital that seek to use public space creatively and create new forms of cultural and historical communication. The “Cave” thus complements the diverse offerings along the Seine, which attract millions of tourists and residents every year.
