Minister Geffray calls for a "systematic suspension" when there are allegations of sexual violence against minors

Paris – 17.06.2026: In the context of growing concerns about sexual abuse of minors in the school environment, Minister of Education Edouard Geffray has called for the implementation of “systematic temporary suspension” of school staff when related allegations arise. This measure aims to stabilize the situation during the ongoing administrative investigation and ensure protection for the affected children. Mr. Geffray emphasized that adopting this approach is necessary to maintain the integrity of the education system and strengthen public trust.

In addition to suspension, the Minister also plans to establish a “blacklist” of individuals permanently banned from accessing educational institutions. This list will not only include those who have been legally convicted but also those who have faced disciplinary actions due to behaviors deemed inappropriate for minors. The goal is to ensure that former employees cannot be re-employed at other educational facilities.

This initiative is part of a broader legislative project aimed at improving child protection, which is currently being discussed by the French government. The law proposes regular and systematic checks on the suitability of people working with children, as well as the establishment of a central registry that educational institutions can consult to ensure student safety.

Reactions to these proposals have been quite varied. While many welcome the enhanced protective measures, some experts warn of potential legal challenges and the need to protect the rights of the accused. They stress that the measures need to be implemented carefully to both protect children and guarantee the rights of those accused.

In the past, the Ministry of Education has taken steps to strengthen child protection. In April 2026, Cristelle Gillard was appointed as the representative for child protection in schools to coordinate prevention and response efforts related to abuse cases. Furthermore, since 2022, checks of school staff suitability have increased by 70%, especially in extracurricular activities.

Despite these efforts, challenges remain in restoring public confidence in school safety. The measures proposed by Minister Geffray mark the next step in this process, while the detailed implementation and legal impacts are still being thoroughly reviewed.

Discussions about child protection in education are expected to intensify in the coming months, especially concerning the passage of laws and associated practical challenges.
