Lightning Strike near Arras: Two Injured After Storm in Pas-de-Calais

A severe thunderstorm on Friday evening in the community of Fampoux near Arras in the Pas-de-Calais department caused a serious incident. Two people were struck by lightning and subsequently required medical treatment. Fortunately, the affected individuals sustained comparatively minor injuries.

The incident occurred during a pronounced thunderstorm situation that affected large parts of northern France. Rescue teams were quickly on site and took over the care of the injured. Afterwards, they were transported to the hospital in Arras. According to initial information, there was no danger to life.

The thunderstorm front moved across the country in connection with the current heatwave. While many people hoped for a cooling down, the weather situation mainly brought enormous electrical activity. Particularly strong thunderstorm cells developed between central France and the north of the country. Wind gusts of partly more than 100 kilometers per hour swept across some regions, accompanied by numerous lightning strikes and heavy rainfall.

Such weather conditions are considered especially treacherous by meteorologists. Hot air masses store enormous amounts of energy that can suddenly be discharged during a weather change. The result is thunderstorms that can cause major damage or endanger people within a short time. The lightning strike in Fampoux impressively shows how quickly an apparently normal situation can turn into an emergency.

The emergency services in Pas-de-Calais were also kept fully busy. Several weather-related operations engaged fire departments and rescue services throughout the evening. Despite the numerous incidents, the overall outcome remained relatively mild. No fatalities were reported from the department.

The authorities also used the incident as an opportunity to once again highlight the dangers of thunderstorms. Anyone outdoors during a storm should avoid open spaces, elevated points, and solitary trees. These places attract lightning particularly often. In addition, electrical energy can spread through the ground or conductive objects after a strike, thereby endangering people in the vicinity.

For the weekend, weather experts still expect isolated thunderstorms in northern France. The very warm air currently covering large parts of the country continues to create an increased potential for severe weather. The situation therefore remains tense—and keeping an eye on the sky is more worthwhile now than ever.
