A sudden storm swept through several municipalities in the Somme department on Thursday, June 18, leaving a trail of destruction. Within minutes, calm streets turned into debris fields. Roofs were torn off, trees uprooted, and numerous buildings damaged. For many residents, the storm felt like a tornado.
Particularly affected were towns around Marchélepot, Licourt, and other communities in the eastern Somme. There, the extreme wind gusts hit residential houses, agricultural buildings, and public facilities with full force. According to initial reports, five people suffered minor injuries. Several families were temporarily unable to return to their homes and had to be accommodated elsewhere for the time being.
The accounts of residents hint at how dramatic the situation was. Many reported a deafening noise before roof tiles, sheet metal parts, and other objects were lifted into the air. What had seemed firmly anchored vanished within seconds into the sky. Some residents spoke of scenes they had previously only known from television footage.
Public buildings were not spared either. Among the damaged facilities is a school whose building was affected by the force of the wind. Firefighters, rescue services, and municipal emergency teams responded immediately to secure danger zones and begin initial cleanup efforts. The teams worked for hours to clear roads and secure damaged buildings.
Images from the affected communities show the full extent of the damage. Branches, roof debris, and other rubble lie on the streets. Agricultural halls were partially torn open, house roofs stripped, and gardens devastated. For many affected, the challenging task now begins to document the damages and restore their homes.
It is still unclear which weather mechanism precisely caused the destruction. Meteorologists are currently examining whether it was particularly strong downbursts associated with a severe thunderstorm or a locally limited, rotating wind phenomenon. The extraordinary intensity of the event raises many questions.
The storm occurred during a period of marked weather instability in northern France. High temperatures and strong air contrasts currently create ideal conditions for powerful thunderstorm cells. Such weather situations can unleash enormous forces within a very short time – with consequences that the residents of the Somme are unlikely to forget soon.
