A sudden storm left a trail of destruction on Thursday, June 18, in several municipalities in the Somme department. Within minutes, quiet streets were transformed into fields of rubble. Roof tiles were torn off, trees uprooted, and numerous buildings damaged. For many residents, the severe weather seemed like a tornado.
The areas around Marchélepot, Licourt, and other municipalities in eastern Somme were particularly affected. Extreme wind gusts struck homes, agricultural buildings, and public facilities with full force. According to initial information, five people suffered minor injuries. Several families were unable to return to their homes and had to be temporarily accommodated elsewhere.
Residents’ accounts suggest just how dramatic the situation was. Many reported a deafening noise before roof tiles, sheets of metal, and other objects were lifted into the air. What had seemed firmly anchored only moments earlier disappeared into the sky within seconds. Some residents spoke of scenes they had previously seen only on television.
Public buildings were not spared either. Among the damaged facilities is a school whose building was damaged by the force of the wind. Firefighters, emergency responders, and municipal forces immediately moved in to secure dangerous areas and begin the initial cleanup work. Teams worked for hours to clear the roads and secure damaged buildings.
Images from the affected municipalities show the full extent of the damage. Branches, roof debris and other rubble lie on the roads. Agricultural sheds have been partially unroofed, residential roofs torn off and gardens devastated. For many of those affected, the complex task of documenting the damage and restoring their homes now begins.
It is not yet clear exactly which weather phenomenon caused the destruction. Meteorologists are examining whether it was particularly strong downbursts associated with a severe thunderstorm or a localized rotating wind phenomenon. The extraordinary intensity of the event raises numerous questions.
The storm occurred during a period of marked weather instability in northern France. High temperatures and strong air contrasts are currently creating ideal conditions for the formation of powerful thunderstorm cells. Such atmospheric conditions can generate enormous forces in a short time, with consequences that the residents of the Somme are unlikely to forget anytime soon.
