Skoda CEO Highlights Positive Impact of Chinese Electric Vehicle Competition

Paris – 20.06.2026: Julien Bessière, Director of Skoda France, addressed the growing competition from Chinese manufacturers in the electric vehicle sector in a detailed interview with Franceinfo. He sees not only challenges but above all opportunities for the European automotive industry, emphasizing that increased competition stimulates innovation and energizes the entire industry.

Skoda is at the center of this change and has significantly expanded its electric vehicle offerings in recent years. Particularly noteworthy is the Elroq, a compact SUV that was awarded Best Compact SUV and Best Electric Vehicle at the 2025 eTrophées by AMAM. This success underlines Skoda’s ability to keep pace not only with established European brands but also with new competitors from China.

Moreover, Skoda plans to launch the Epiq, a compact electric SUV expected to enter the market in 2026. With an entry price of around 25,000 euros, Skoda aims to offer an attractively priced model that appeals to a broad customer base and could play an important role in the affordable electric vehicle segment.

Bessière stresses that Chinese competition increases pressure on European manufacturers to continuously improve their products and remain technologically leading. This competition leads to an acceleration in the development of new technologies, more efficient vehicle components, and better user experiences. For consumers, this results in a greater selection of innovative vehicles and an improved price-performance ratio.

Skoda views these challenges as motivation to further strengthen its market position in Europe and beyond. Digitization, combined with new propulsion technologies and the expansion of charging infrastructure, enables the manufacturer to respond to evolving customer needs. Collaboration within the Volkswagen Group additionally supports the development of competitive electric vehicles.

The entire automotive industry is facing profound changes as Chinese manufacturers continuously expand their presence in Europe. This dynamic forces established manufacturers to rethink their strategies and accelerate innovation. At the same time, customers benefit from an increasingly diversified and technologically advanced offering.

In the coming years, it will become clear how the competition between European and Chinese companies will evolve and what role Skoda will play in this. However, it is clear that the entire industry gains momentum from this competition, contributing to a faster transition to electromobility and thus enabling ecological progress.

Skoda aims to secure a leading position in the European market with attractive, powerful, and affordable electric vehicles and to provide sustainable mobility solutions for its customers.
