Avignon Festival remains a forum for freedom despite controversial debates

Avignon – 19.06.2026: The renowned theatre festival in Avignon, taking place from 4 to 25 July, once again focuses on artistic freedom and diversity of discourse. Tiago Rodrigues, the festival’s artistic director, made it clear in an interview with France Inter that the festival is not a place of division, but rather brings people together—not necessarily through unanimity, but through the acceptance of dissent and different perspectives.

Avignon’s new mayor had criticised the previous year that the presence of the Palestinian theme in the programme was too dominant. Rodrigues responded by referring to the festival’s fundamental stance, which continues to function as a forum for free expression. The festival does not want to follow a single voice, but to provide space for diverse and controversial voices as well.

Traditionally, the Avignon Festival has maintained its reputation as a haven for artistic and social debates.
