Bayahibe – June 19, 2026: On Friday, a fire broke out at the luxury resort Viva Wyndham Dominicus Beach in Bayahibe, a famous holiday destination on the southeast coast of the Dominican Republic. The fire nearly destroyed the entire hotel area, leading to the emergency evacuation of about 1,700 tourists. One Italian female tourist tragically lost her life in the incident, while other tourists were injured and received medical treatment.
The fire occurred in the afternoon and spread rapidly due to strong winds and the resort’s thatched roof structure. Local authorities responded quickly, organizing an orderly evacuation which prevented further casualties. The tourists were subsequently relocated to nearby hotels and accommodation facilities.

The deceased tourist has been identified as Francesca Valentino. Three others were sent to nearby hospitals for treatment, and six tourists received medical assistance on site. The government and rescue teams praised the swift and coordinated evacuation efforts, which avoided greater losses.
