Paris – 06/20/2026: Bruno Retailleau, president of the Republicans (Les Républicains), officially launched his presidential campaign for the 2027 elections on Saturday with a large event at the Parc Floral in Paris. Before around 4,000 listeners, Retailleau presented his political goals and priorities, emphasizing his role as an advocate for the middle class and businesses.
The guests included the Franco-Algerian writer Boualem Sansal, who had been released in November 2025 after a year of imprisonment in Algeria. Sansal had previously praised Retailleau’s support for his release. His presence conveyed a message of solidarity and pointed to the international dimension of Retailleau’s agenda.
In his speech, Retailleau sharply criticized the political stance of La France Insoumise (LFI). Notably, he made no direct attacks on the Rassemblement National (RN), which attracted special attention in the dynamic French party landscape.
A central point of his program is combating drug trafficking. Retailleau proposed the introduction of a “state of emergency against drug trafficking.” This should include extended pre-trial detention and increased police presence in affected neighborhoods to curb crime. This tough approach aims to improve safety in cities and reduce the social consequences of drug-related crime.
The choice of Paris as the location for the campaign launch was strategically chosen. The capital symbolizes cultural diversity and international connectivity, supporting Retailleau’s message of social cohesion and an open society. The participation of Boualem Sansal reinforced this symbolic character.
Despite the positive atmosphere, there were also critical voices among the Republicans. Some party members questioned the organization of the event and the selection of guests, indicating internal disagreements. These differences could affect the party’s unity in the government and election arena.
The launch of Retailleau’s campaign marks a significant step ahead of the 2027 presidential election. His clear focus on the concerns of the middle class, urban security, and economic support for businesses could become key themes of his candidacy. It remains to be seen how this will be reflected in polls and voter favor in the coming months.
Retailleau aims with his program primarily to win over non-voters and moderate citizens to strengthen the political center. The coming months will be crucial for his positioning between the political camps and the other candidates in the race for the highest office in France.
