Auto Repair Shops in France Overloaded: Air Conditioning Service in High Demand During Heatwave

Paris – 21.06.2026: France is currently experiencing an unusually intense heatwave that is putting strain not only on people and infrastructure but also massively increasing the demands on auto repair shops. In particular, the demand for repairs and maintenance of vehicle air conditioning systems has risen sharply in recent days. Many workshops are facing a significantly higher workload, leading to fully booked schedules and long waiting times.

Reports from several regions indicate that in some workshops, up to 30 vehicles present daily with air conditioning problems. The result is waiting times of up to one week for the next available repair appointment. This situation poses major challenges for the employees: they must manage an increased workload while also ensuring the quality of their work despite the time pressure.

The current heatwave started on June 17 and has led to extremely high temperatures nationwide, reaching up to 40 degrees Celsius in some areas. Such conditions increase the need for vehicles to have functioning air conditioning systems to provide drivers and passengers with a bearable interior temperature. The weather service Météo-France warns of the ongoing heat, which, in addition to health risks, also brings economic consequences.

Auto repair shops are responding to the increased demand in different ways. Some have introduced additional shifts or brought in external workers to handle the rush. Nevertheless, the situation remains tense, and customers are advised to book appointments early to avoid long wait times. At the same time, experts emphasize the importance of preventive maintenance of air conditioning systems to prevent major breakdowns during extreme weather conditions.

Climate change also plays a role in the increasing frequency of such extreme weather events. The rising number and intensity of heatwaves demand better adaptation across various industries, including vehicle repair and maintenance. The current situation highlights the necessity to make infrastructure and workflows in workshops more resilient to climate-related stresses.

For vehicle owners, it is advisable to have regular air conditioning checks and to take additional precautions, such as using sun protection films or wearing light-colored clothing while driving. This helps maintain comfort inside the vehicle even during hot days.

The situation continues to evolve dynamically. It is recommended to follow local weather warnings and schedule repair appointments proactively. The current overload of auto shops demonstrates how closely weather extremes and economic processes are intertwined—a topic that is likely to gain increasing importance in the future.
