Iran and USA Continue Talks in Switzerland: Progress on Lebanon and Strait of Hormuz

Bürgenstock, Switzerland – 22.06.2026: The ongoing talks between the USA and Iran at the Bürgenstock Resort in Switzerland show progress in seeking solutions for conflicts in Lebanon as well as securing the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. The negotiations began on June 21, 2026, with the goal of reducing tensions in the Middle East and establishing stable security mechanisms.

The talks are led by U.S. Vice President JD Vance and the Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf. Both delegations consist of high-ranking government officials. Focus areas include agreements to end military hostilities in Lebanon and to ensure safe navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil trade.

Despite the progress made, tensions arose when U.S. President Donald Trump publicly pressured Iran to control the Hezbollah militia in Lebanon. This led to a temporary interruption of the talks as the Iranian delegation sought internal consultations. After a pause, negotiations resumed. However, the Iranian side made clear that further progress would only be possible if Israeli attacks in Lebanon ceased.

Pakistan and Qatar act as mediators, both serving as neutral parties to build trust between the interlocutors. Their involvement was crucial in restarting the negotiations after the interruption and fostering a constructive dialogue.

A significant breakthrough is the agreement to establish a “De-confliction Center” and the creation of a communication line to secure navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. These measures aim to reduce misunderstandings and enhance safety in this vital waterway for international trade.

Despite these advances, challenges remain, especially regarding control of Hezbollah in Lebanon and practical implementation of the security agreements. Both sides emphasized their readiness to cooperate and agreed to continue technical negotiations in the coming days to detail specific arrangements.

The international community is watching developments closely, as an agreement between the United States and Iran could have significant impacts on regional stability and global security. Continuing talks in Switzerland is considered an important step toward a peaceful resolution of conflicts in the Middle East.

Technical teams from both sides remain in Switzerland to conduct further talks over the next days and monitor the implementation of agreements. The hope is that these negotiations will contribute to sustainable peace and reduce tensions in the region in the long term.
