Watermelon as a Refreshing Fruit in Hot Weather: Imports from Spain and Morocco

Paris – 22.06.2026: During the hot summer months, consumption of watermelons in France increases significantly. This refreshing fruit, which consists of about 92% water, is considered an ideal way to cool down in high temperatures. Although France has its own cultivation areas, many watermelons are imported from Spain and Morocco to meet the increased demand.

In 2025, Morocco exported around 175,000 tons of watermelons worth 190 million US dollars, which represents an increase of 54% compared to 2024. France is the most important buyer, taking about half of the Moroccan exports. Spain follows with just over 23 percent, while the United Kingdom ranks third with 8.5 percent. Shipments to the UK and Portugal in 2025 nearly reached again the record levels of 2022. Other significant buyers included Belgium, the Netherlands, Mauritania, and Germany; other markets accounted together for a little more than one percent of exports.

Despite challenges such as water scarcity and climatic conditions, Morocco has strengthened its role as an important exporter of watermelons for the European market. The quality of Moroccan fruits is valued in European markets, confirming the rising export figures.

In contrast, watermelon imports in Spain have decreased significantly in recent years. Between 2022 and 2024, imports fell by 45.3 percent, while exports increased by 15.58 percent at the same time. Particularly striking was the decline in watermelon purchases from Morocco by 76.6 percent – from 122.56 million kilograms in 2022 to only 28.7 million kilograms in 2024.

Despite these market developments, watermelon remains an indispensable part of French summer tables. Its refreshing properties and high water content make it the preferred choice during heatwaves. Continuous supply by importers from Spain and Morocco ensures that French consumers do not have to do without this invigorating fruit even during the hottest months.

Botanically, watermelon is a member of the gourd family. In many cultures, it is appreciated as a symbol of summer and refreshment. Its versatility is evident not only in direct consumption but also in dishes and drinks. In France, watermelon is enjoyed plain, in salads, smoothies, or desserts.

Given the global challenges for agriculture, particularly regarding water resources and climate change, the long-term development of watermelon production and trade remains exciting. Nevertheless, the current supply situation ensures that watermelon remains a popular and refreshing fruit in French summer months.
