Washington D.C. – 06/23/2026: The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington D.C., recently renovated for over 14 million dollars, is already showing significant defects shortly after completion. The newly applied blue paint is peeling, and algae have turned the water green. President Donald Trump holds vandalism responsible for these problems and threatens imprisonment for the perpetrators.
The renovation of the pool, located in front of the Lincoln Memorial, was personally ordered by Trump to prepare it for the celebrations of the 250th anniversary of US independence. The goal was to make the water shine in an “American-Flag-Blue.” However, just a few days after completion of the work, the first problems appeared: The paint began to peel, and algae infestation colored the water green.
Trump responded to these defects by claiming vandalism was the cause. He stated that someone had cut a 250-foot-long hole in the pool’s surface with a knife or similar tool. He also alleged that corrosive chemicals had been poured into the pool. However, no evidence for these accusations was presented.
The responsible authorities, including the U.S. Park Police and the National Park Service, have launched investigations. According to a spokesperson from the Department of the Interior, five people have been arrested and five others fined. In total, 14 police reports of vandalism have been filed. The U.S. Park Police emphasized that they would continue to pursue their main task of maintaining law and order within the National Mall.
Pool experts suspect that the problems are due to insufficient preparation of the surface before treatment. Steve Goodale, a pool specialist, explained that defects in surface preparation can lead to coating failure, which causes peeling. Another possible reason might be the infiltration of groundwater or pool water beneath the coating.
The pool’s renovation was part of Trump’s initiative to beautify Washington D.C. for the upcoming 250th anniversary of independence celebrations. In addition to renovating the pool, other projects were announced, such as the demolition of the East Wing of the White House and the construction of a large arch near Arlington National Cemetery.
The ongoing problems with the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool raise questions about the quality of the work performed and the responsibility of the companies involved. The public now expects transparent investigations and clarification of the causes of the defects.
