Historian and Resistance fighter Marc Bloch together with his wife have been inducted into the Pantheon.

Paris – 23.06.2026: Marc Bloch, a prominent historian and Resistance fighter during World War II, was posthumously inducted into the Pantheon on June 23, 2026. Alongside him, his wife, Simone Vidal, who significantly contributed to his academic work and his resistance against Nazism, was symbolically honored as well.

Marc Bloch, born in 1886, was a pioneer of modern historiography and one of the co-founders of the Annales School. His works, including “La société féodale” and “L’étrange défaite,” had a lasting impact on the science of history. During World War II, he actively participated in the Resistance movement and was executed by the Gestapo in 1944.

The decision to induct Bloch into the Pantheon was made by President Emmanuel Macron in November 2024, who praised his “work, scholarship, and courage.” The Bloch family initially expressed concerns about potential political instrumentalization of his legacy, especially by right-wing radical groups. They emphasized their wish for the ceremony to be “exclusively secular” and free of any religious or nationalist elements.

Several events honoring Bloch’s legacy were held prior to the Pantheon ceremony. The École normale supérieure organized a “Republican Vigil” on June 22 and 23, 2026, where citizens gathered in the institute’s historic library to remember and reflect.

The induction of Marc Bloch into the Pantheon emphasizes the significance of his contributions to the history and culture of France. It recognizes not only his academic achievements but also his unwavering resistance to fascism and commitment to republican values. Through this honor, his legacy stands as a symbol of the defense of freedom and truth.

The ceremony was personally conducted by President Macron, excluding the right-wing radical party Rassemblement National from the event, in accordance with the family’s wishes. This decision reflects the desire to protect Bloch’s legacy from political instrumentalization and to preserve the memory of him within dignified boundaries.

Marc Bloch’s induction into the Pantheon is another step in recognizing the Resistance fighters and intellectuals of France who made significant contributions to the protection of the Republic and its values. This honor serves as a reminder of the importance of the Resistance and intellectual freedom in the history of France.

The Pantheon induction of Marc Bloch is an important event that strengthens the connection between scholarship, the Resistance, and national memory in France. It honors the life and work of a man who left an indelible mark as a historian and Resistance fighter.
