The historian and resistance fighter Marc Bloch is welcomed into the Pantheon together with his wife.

Paris – June 23, 2026: Marc Bloch, an important historian of World War II and Resistance fighter, was posthumously inducted into the Pantheon on June 23, 2026. Symbolically, Simone Vidal, who made significant contributions to his academic work and resistance against Nazism, was also welcomed beside him.

Marc Bloch was born in 1886 and was a pioneer of modern historical science as well as a co-founder of the Annales School. His works, especially “Feudal Society” and “Strange Defeat,” have had a lasting impact on historical scholarship. During World War II, he was actively involved in the Resistance and was shot by the Gestapo in 1944.

The decision to welcome Bloch into the Pantheon was made by President Emmanuel Macron in November 2024, honoring his “work, teaching, and courage.” Initially, Bloch’s family expressed concerns about his legacy being politically exploited, particularly by far-right groups. They emphasized their wish for the ceremony to be “purely civic” without any religious or nationalist overtones.

Before the Pantheon induction, various events celebrating Bloch’s legacy were held. The École normale supérieure hosted a “Republican Vigil” on June 22 and 23, 2026, where citizens gathered in the school’s historic library for moments of remembrance and reflection.
