Panthéonization of Marc Bloch: A Political Signal?

Paris – 06/23/2026: Marc Bloch, a renowned historian and resistance fighter, was today inducted in a solemn ceremony into the Panthéon. This step, occurring 82 years after his murder by the Gestapo, honors Bloch’s significant contribution to French history and culture.

President Emmanuel Macron had already announced the Panthéonization in November 2024 to honor Bloch’s “work, teachings, and courage.” In his speech, Macron emphasized the “cutting clarity” of Bloch’s analyses and his “oratorical power,” which still impresses today. He also highlighted Bloch’s “French will until his last breath,” culminating in his murder by the Gestapo.

The family of Marc Bloch initially expressed concerns about potential political instrumentalization. They insisted that the ceremony be “strictly civil” without religious or nationalist elements. Furthermore, they requested that representatives of the far-right be excluded from participation. These wishes were respected, and the ceremony took place without members of the Rassemblement National present.

Marc Bloch, born in 1886, was a pioneer of modern historiography and co-founder of the influential journal “Annales d’histoire économique et sociale.” His works, especially “La Société féodale” and “L’Étrange Défaite,” have had lasting impacts on historical science. As a soldier in both world wars and a committed resistance fighter, he stood up for republican values.

The induction of Marc Bloch into the Panthéon occurs in the context of several Panthéonizations during Macron’s presidency, including those of Simone Veil, Joséphine Baker, and Robert Badinter. These decisions reflect Macron’s desire to honor personalities who embody republican values, secularism, and the fight against racism.

The ceremony today was attended by numerous representatives from the government, academia, and civil society. It underscored the importance of Marc Bloch’s legacy for French identity and the nation’s culture of remembrance. Through his admission to the Panthéon, his contribution to scholarship and resistance against fascism is anchored in the national memory.

The Panthéonization of Marc Bloch can be understood as a political signal emphasizing the republic’s values and the significance of remembering resistance against National Socialism. It also represents recognition of the role of science and intellectual freedom in French society.
