Paris – 23.06.2026: Marc Bloch, a renowned historian and resistance fighter, was today solemnly inducted into the Pantheon. This step, made 82 years after his murder by the Gestapo, honors Bloch’s significant contribution to French history and culture.
President Emmanuel Macron announced the pantheonization already in November 2024, to honor Bloch’s “works, teachings, and courage.” In his speech, Macron emphasized Bloch’s “sharp clarity” of analysis and his “strong voice,” which remains impressive today. He also highlighted Bloch’s “French will to the last breath,” which ended with his murder by the Gestapo.
The family of Marc Bloch initially expressed concern about possible political instrumentalization. They insisted that the ceremony be “purely civil” and free of religious or nationalist elements. A request was also made to exclude representatives of the far right from participating. These requests were respected, and the ceremony took place without members of Rassemblement National.
Marc Bloch, born in 1886, was a pioneer of modern historiography and co-founder of the influential journal “Annales d’histoire économique et sociale.” His works, especially “La Société féodale” and “L’Étrange Défaite,” significantly influenced historical science. As a soldier in two world wars and an active resistance fighter, he defended the values of the Republic.
The inclusion of Marc Bloch in the Pantheon comes in the context of several pantheonizations during Macron’s presidency, among them Simone Veil, Josephine Baker, and Robert Badinter. These decisions reflect Macron’s desire to honor personalities who stand for republican values, secularism, and the fight against racism.
Today’s ceremony was attended by numerous representatives of the government, the academic community, and civil society. It underlined the importance of Marc Bloch’s legacy for French identity and the country’s culture of memory. Through his induction into the Pantheon, his contribution to science and resistance to fascism is secured in the national memory.
The pantheonization of Marc Bloch can be seen as a political signal emphasizing republican values and the importance of memory of resistance to Nazism. At the same time, it is a recognition of the role of science and intellectual freedom in French society.
