The inclusion of Marc Bloch in the Panthéon: A political signal?

Paris – 23.06.2026: Marc Bloch, a renowned historian and resistance fighter, was inducted today in a solemn ceremony at the Panthéon. This step, taking place 82 years after he was murdered by the Gestapo, honors Bloch’s significant contributions to French history and culture.

President Emmanuel Macron announced Bloch’s induction into the Panthéon in November 2024 to honor “his work, teachings, and courage.” In his speech, Macron emphasized Bloch’s “sharpness in analysis” and “power of speech,” which continue to impress to this day. He also praised Bloch’s “French will” until his last breath, when he was killed by the Gestapo.

The family of Marc Bloch initially expressed concerns about the event being exploited for political purposes. They requested that the ceremony be “completely civil” with no religious or nationalist elements. They also asked that representatives of the far-right not be allowed to participate. These requests were respected, and the ceremony took place without the presence of members of the Rassemblement National.

Marc Bloch, born in 1886, was a pioneer in modern historiography and co-founder of the influential journal “Annales d’histoire économique et sociale.” His works, especially “La Société féodale” and “L’Étrange Défaite,” deeply influenced the field of history. As a soldier in both world wars and a passionate resistance fighter, he devoted himself to the values of the Republic.

The induction of Marc Bloch into the Panthéon comes amidst a series of individuals enshrined during Macron’s presidency, including Simone Veil, Joséphine Baker, and Robert Badinter. These decisions reflect Macron’s effort to honor figures representing republican values, secularism, and the fight against racism.

Today’s ceremony was attended by many government representatives, academics, and civil society members. The event highlighted the importance of Marc Bloch’s legacy for French identity and the nation’s memory culture. His induction into the Panthéon marked his contributions to science and the resistance against fascism in the national memory.

The induction of Marc Bloch into the Panthéon can be understood as a political signal emphasizing the values of the Republic and the significance of remembering the fight against Nazism. At the same time, it is also recognition of the role of science and intellectual freedom in French society.
