France is experiencing a historic heatwave with record temperatures and the first deaths

Paris – 06/23/2026: France is currently experiencing an exceptionally early and intense heatwave, which began on June 17 and is expected to last at least until the end of June. On June 23, the national average temperature reached the highest level ever recorded at 29.8 °C.

These extreme temperatures have led to numerous school closures and train cancellations. Furthermore, at least 40 drowning deaths have been recorded in rivers and lakes, as many people tried to cool off in unsupervised areas. The most alarming cases concern the regions around the major rivers Loire and Rhône, where strong currents and the absence of supervised beaches have caused several accidents.

In response to this heatwave, the red alert level was triggered in 54 departments, while 35 others are on orange alert. These measures concern more than 90% of the French population. Authorities have activated emergency plans to particularly protect vulnerable groups to heat, such as the elderly, children, and chronically ill. Volunteer organizations are also coordinating water distribution and aid operations for affected people.

The heatwave is also affecting infrastructure: rail traffic is suffering from the effects of the heat with delays and cancellations of trains. Additionally, several nuclear power plants must reduce their output because the rivers from which they draw their cooling water are warmer than usual. The public energy company EDF has already reported disturbances at the Golfech plants in the South as well as at the Blayais, Bugey, and Saint-Alban plants in the East. The reduction in electricity production increases the risk of shortages, urging consumers to adopt responsible energy use.

Climatologists consider this heatwave a clear sign of growing global warming. According to their calculations, the measured temperatures exceed by up to 4 °C those that would have been recorded without human-caused climate change. These events highlight the urgency of adaptation and protection measures against extreme weather phenomena.

Authorities recommend that the population avoid physical exertion during heat periods, drink enough fluids, seek cool places, and stay alert to warnings. Cooling spaces have been set up in several cities to offer a safe refuge for people without air conditioning.

This exceptional heatwave affects not only health and infrastructure but also agriculture, which is suffering from drought. Experts therefore call for enhanced preparedness for more frequent and intense heat episodes through sustainable water management and adapted cultivation methods. The current situation is profoundly changing awareness regarding climate adaptation measures in France.
