France is experiencing a historic heat wave with record temperatures and initial deaths

Paris – 23.06.2026: France is currently experiencing an exceptionally early and intense heatwave, which began on June 17 and is expected to last at least until the end of June. On June 23, a national average temperature of 29.8 °C was reached, the highest value ever recorded.

The extreme temperatures have led to the closure of numerous schools and train cancellations. In addition, at least 40 deaths by drowning in rivers and lakes have been reported, as many people tried to cool off in uncontrolled waters. Particularly alarming are the cases in the regions around the major rivers Loire and Rhône, where strong currents and the lack of supervised bathing areas have caused several accidents.

In response to the heatwave, the highest red alert level has been declared in 54 departments, while another 35 departments are under the orange alert level. These measures affect over 90% of the French population. Authorities have activated emergency plans to particularly protect vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children, and people with chronic illnesses. Volunteer organizations also coordinate assistance operations for distributing water and supporting those affected.

The heatwave is also impacting infrastructure: rail traffic is suffering due to high temperatures, with delays and train cancellations. In addition, several nuclear power plants must reduce their output, since the rivers used for cooling are warmer than usual. The state energy company EDF has already reported malfunctions at the Golfech plant in the south and at the Blayais, Bugey, and Saint-Alban plants in the east. The reduced energy production increases the risk of power shortages, so consumers are urged to use energy responsibly.

Climatologists see the current heatwave as a clear sign of increasing global warming. According to their estimates, the measured temperatures are up to 4 °C higher than those that would have occurred without human-caused climate change. The events underline the urgency of adaptation and protection measures against extreme weather conditions.

Authorities recommend that the population avoid physical exertion during periods of intense heat, stay adequately hydrated, frequent cool places, and pay attention to warnings. Cooling rest points have been set up in several cities to offer a safe refuge for people without air conditioning.

This extraordinary heatwave is putting pressure on health, infrastructure, and also agriculture, which is suffering from drought. Experts therefore call for strengthened preparation for more frequent and intense heatwaves through sustainable water use and adapted cultivation methods. The current situation is significantly changing awareness regarding climate adaptation measures in France.
