Marc Bloch and His Wife Simonne Buried in the Panthéon

Paris – 06/23/2026: The historian and resistance fighter Marc Bloch was posthumously buried in the Paris Panthéon on June 23, 2026. Alongside his wife Simonne, he received an honor recognizing his contributions to historical scholarship and his commitment to the resistance against the Nazi occupation.

The ceremony, led by President Emmanuel Macron, began in the evening and attracted numerous guests from politics, culture, and science. Members of Bloch’s family, including his granddaughter Suzette, also attended the moving event. Induction into the Panthéon represents one of France’s highest honors and recognizes individuals who have distinguished themselves in service to the Republic.

Marc Bloch, born in 1886, was a co-founder of the so-called Annales School, which shaped modern historical science with new methods and perspectives. In addition to his academic work, he was active in the resistance against the National Socialist occupation of France during World War II. In 1944, he was arrested by the Gestapo, tortured, and ultimately executed.

The decision for Panthéon induction was announced in November 2024 by President Macron. Initially, there were concerns within the Bloch family that Marc Bloch’s memory might be politically instrumentalized. After intensive discussions, it was agreed to organize the honor as a purely civil society celebration without religious or nationalist elements.

The ceremony was characterized by many symbolic elements. Actors such as Jacques Gamblin and Lou de Laâge read moving texts, musically accompanied by Gabriel Fauré’s “Pavane.” The honor was framed by the Garde Républicaine. The graves of Marc and Simonne Bloch were decorated with personal memorabilia such as military medals and letters.

With this Panthéonization, Marc Bloch is honored as a defender of truth and as a symbol of France’s intellectual and moral resistance. His work and his courage in the fight against the occupation remain a significant legacy that reminds French society of values such as freedom, democracy, and human dignity.

To accompany the honor, the Panthéon is presenting the exhibition “Marc Bloch, l’esprit de l’Histoire” from June 25, 2026, until January 10, 2027. It offers insights into his life, his scholarly work, and his dedication to the resistance.

The induction of Marc Bloch and his wife Simonne into the Panthéon underscores the importance of honoring historical figures who have committed themselves decisively to the Republic. It strengthens the culture of remembrance in France and helps to keep the lessons from the past alive for the future.
