How the Young Generation Uses TikTok to Cope with Climate Anxiety Amid Heatwaves

Paris – June 24, 2026: As France faces an unprecedented heatwave, cases of young people under 25 using TikTok to cope with anxiety caused by the climate crisis are increasing. Social media is not only a place for entertainment but also provides an important space for exchanging views on environmental issues and personal experiences.

The current heatwave has brought temperatures reaching 40°C in many regions, already causing numerous health problems. According to the Ministry of Health’s report, since June 18, there have been 40 drowning incidents mainly involving young people, indicating that the heatwave is severely affecting not only physical but also mental health.

In such circumstances, concerns about “eco-anxiety” (Éco-anxiété) are rising. This is a mental state caused by awareness of environmental destruction and fear for the future. Psychologists are warning about the psychological impacts of climate change, especially noting the strong feelings of helplessness among the younger generation.

TikTok has established itself as an important platform where young users share their anxieties, support each other, and discuss concrete actions to counter climate change. These digital communities provide a safe space where those affected can find understanding and collaboratively explore solutions.

On the other hand, there are critical voices questioning TikTok’s role in addressing mental health issues. In March 2026, the French Ministry of Education launched an investigation into the platform due to the spread of content potentially promoting eating disorders, self-harm, and suicide. This has highlighted issues concerning social media responsibility and its impact on mental health.

Despite these risks, TikTok remains a central place for many young people to engage in exchange about climate anxiety. Experts emphasize the importance of fostering such communities to raise awareness of environmental issues and encourage collective action. However, it is also essential to rigorously verify the quality of information and prevent misinformation.

Social media has a dual nature, providing support while also generating new burdens and anxieties. Society and politics are called upon to guide the use of digital platforms responsibly and strengthen protections for mental health.

In view of the ongoing heatwave and the broad impacts of climate change, structural measures must be taken to sustainably protect the mental health of the population and effectively address the causes of global warming. Only by combining individual support and political action can this challenge be properly tackled.
