Climatologists warn of hotter summers without decarbonisation

Paris – June 25, 2026: Françoise Vimeux, Director of Scientific Research at the French National Research Institute for Sustainable Development (IRD), warned about the consequences of insufficient decarbonization. She stressed that without decisive action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, summers will become increasingly hotter in the coming years. Vimeux explained that current summers may appear to be the coolest of our lives compared with future summers.

The climatologist explained that the rate of temperature increase in the French Alps is twice the global average. She projected that if temperatures rise by 1.5°C compared with pre-industrial levels, almost all glaciers in the Alps could disappear by the end of the century.

Vimeux emphasized that reducing greenhouse gas emissions is urgent in order to prevent the worst impacts of climate change. She warned that without decisive action, summers will become increasingly hotter in the future.
