Enedis Activates Emergency Team Due to Massive Power Outages in France

Paris – 26.06.2026: The ongoing heatwave has heavily strained the French power grid over the past days, leading to considerable power outages. On Thursday, June 25, 2026, more than 27,000 households in the Yvelines were without power, about 5,000 in Gironde, and around 7,400 in Hauts-de-Seine. The interruptions were mainly caused by overheating of underground cables, which can fail under extreme temperatures.

To bring the situation under control, Enedis activated its “Force d’Intervention Rapide Électricité” (FIRE). This emergency team consists of several thousand specially trained professionals who can be dispatched to affected areas within 24 hours. The original purpose of this team was to manage major natural disasters, but the current situation highlights the severity of the strain on France’s power grid.

Technical problems occurred predominantly in urban areas where a large portion of power lines is laid underground. At temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius, the soil temperature around the cables can reach up to 80 degrees, explaining the outages. Enedis uses advanced weather forecasts based on artificial intelligence to identify such risks early and take preventive action.

For customers whose power supply is interrupted for more than five hours, Enedis offers automatic compensation. Affected households can contact the emergency service at 09 72 67 50 XX, where “XX” stands for the respective department number. It is also recommended to disconnect sensitive devices from the power grid during outages to avoid damage.

The current heatwave is considered one of the most severe in French history. It underscores the vulnerability of energy infrastructure to the impacts of climate change. Enedis continuously works on modernizing the grid to improve resilience against extreme weather events. Nevertheless, the situation remains tense, and authorities advise the public to exercise caution and follow local instructions.

Power restoration is being carried out step by step as Enedis teams work intensively to minimize the effects of high temperatures. These events demonstrate the increasing importance of adapting and monitoring energy infrastructure to meet the challenges of climate change. Enedis emphasizes the importance of cooperation with authorities and the public to ensure reliable power supply in the future.
