EDF Provides Immediately Available Funds to Protect Schools in France from Heat

Paris – 26.06.2026: In view of the increasing and recurring heatwaves in France, EDF has made part of the allocated 130 million euros immediately available. These funds are intended to quickly equip schools, leisure, and childcare facilities with cooling measures to lessen the impact of the heat on children and staff. Together with Banque des Territoires, La Banque Postale, and the French government, this funding program was established to rapidly adapt the infrastructure of public facilities to extreme weather caused by climate change.

The financing is part of a comprehensive strategy that links energy supply, protection of particularly vulnerable groups, and sustainable adaptations to climate change. The funds are invested in air conditioning systems, improved insulation, and technical equipment, among other things. EDF emphasizes that the funds can be accessed at short notice to enable rapid responses and ensure immediately effective protective measures.

European heatwaves have become more intense and frequent in recent years. Children in schools and daycare centers are particularly vulnerable to extreme temperatures. The French government is responding with a coordinated approach that combines investments in building infrastructure with prevention and information campaigns to prevent health risks.

EDF is taking on not only the role of energy provider but also acting as a central partner in implementing state environmental and health goals. Collaboration with public banks and government agencies supports the sustainable financing of urgently needed infrastructure measures. The disbursement of the 130 million euros complements funding in the renewable energy sector and efforts to reduce CO2 emissions.

This initiative represents a significant step in addressing the consequences of climate change on public life in France. The rapid availability of part of the funds underscores the actors’ sense of responsibility given the urgency. The goal is to provide effective short- and medium-term protection against overheating in community facilities.

The measures also reflect the growing importance of climate adaptation policies at national and European levels. The use of public and private funds to manage heat effects exemplifies a paradigm shift in environmental policy toward more resilience and the protection of particularly vulnerable populations.

The organizational implementation and distribution of the funds are carried out decentrally through regional and local agencies. EDF and the involved banks coordinate the processes to ensure a quick and targeted allocation. This ensures that all affected facilities are equipped with the necessary resources as soon as possible to effectively protect the health of children and staff.
