Lyhanna Case: Jérôme Barella’s Wife Files Report of Rape and Domestic Violence

The wife of Jérôme Barella, the prime suspect in the murder of 11-year-old Lyhanna, filed a complaint against her husband on June 18. Jérôme Barella, a 41-year-old job placement officer, was previously known for sexual assaults on other minor girls. Despite several reports and tips, he had never been arrested or questioned. It was only after the murder of Lyhanna, whose body was discovered on June 4 in Gers, that he was taken into custody. The autopsy confirmed that the girl had been raped, with Barella’s DNA found at the crime scene.

Already in August 2025, the mother of another girl had filed a complaint against Barella, alleging that he had raped her daughter multiple times between September 2024 and May 2025. A gynecological report supported the girl’s statements, but the case was not processed for months. Barella was only arrested following Lyhanna’s murder.

The latest complaint by his wife adds another dimension to the investigations. The allegations refer to a years-long series of abuse and sexual assaults in their shared household. Investigators are now examining whether these acts are connected to other accusations and how extensive the offenses might be.

In Montestruc-sur-Gers, there is dismay and shock over the events. Many villagers express their horror that such serious crimes involving direct ties to schoolchildren could occur in their neighborhood.
