Léon Marchand withdraws from remaining events at French Championships due to adductor pain

Saint-Étienne – 30.06.2026: Léon Marchand has withdrawn from the remaining events of the Championnats de France de natation in Saint-Étienne. The 24-year-old felt pain on Monday morning during the heats of the 200 m breaststroke in his right adductor and underwent a medical examination. After consultation with the team doctors and the competition organisers, he decided not to continue in Saint-Étienne. The doctors did not consider an immediate return to the pool advisable.

Marchand had completed the 200 m breaststroke in the preliminaries without going at full speed and immediately reported discomfort on the inside of his thigh. His camp confirmed in the afternoon that he would withdraw for the remaining days of the national championships, which run from 27 June to 2 July 2026. Official sources said further assessments and a graduated rehabilitation plan are planned to determine the extent of the problem and the timeline for resuming training. No concrete information on the length of the break is available.

The withdrawal significantly affects the sporting landscape of the championships. Marchand was entered in several events, including the 200 m freestyle and other individual disciplines, in which he was among the favourites. His absence shifts the balance in the finals; rivals gain additional opportunities for titles and international qualifying times. The Fédération Française de Natation announced it will communicate qualification results and any procedures for replacements in the usual manner after the end of the competition.

Marchand has for years been one of the defining figures of French swimming. At major international events he has set standards, particularly in medley and breaststroke events. The adductor pain now reported is considered a sensitive area in swimming, as starts, turns and the leg work in breaststroke and butterfly place high demands on the adductors. Medically, a combination of rest, physiotherapy and a cautious progression of loading is usually emphasised to avoid relapses.

The organisers in Saint-Étienne pointed to the priority of athlete health. Further information will be released by Team Marchand after the next examinations. In view of the international calendar, it is crucial for the French team that the medical measures take effect quickly and that an orderly training build-up becomes possible. For the ongoing championships, however, Marchand’s participation is over; sporting attention now turns to the replacement scenarios in his usual disciplines and to who will seize the open title opportunities.
