France 2 focuses on 250 years of French-American relations for July 4

Paris – 30.06.2026: France 2 is announcing, for the week around US Independence Day, a multi-part documentary that traces 250 years of relations between France and the United States. The production relies on extensive archival footage, newly contextualized documents, and interviews with historians as well as former diplomats. The focus is on how political interests, military alliances, and cultural reference points have shifted since the 18th century — and which constants have remained despite recurring tensions.

The starting point is support for the American independence movement, to which Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de La Fayette, contributed as a prominent figure. The film places this episode in the broader context of transatlantic flows of ideas, in which the Enlightenment, republicanism, and the motif of civic rights played a connecting role. This early closeness is symbolically condensed in the inauguration of the Statue of Liberty in 1886, which, as a gift from France, became a sign of political and cultural kinship.

For the 20th century, the documentary turns its gaze to the complex relationship between Charles de Gaulle and the United States. Using rare recordings and contemporary reports, it traces lines of conflict — from questions of nuclear deterrence to the readjustment of French sovereignty within NATO. At the same time, the film shows how economic interdependence, intelligence cooperation, and shared operational theaters persisted even during phases of political distance.

Another focal point is the controversies since the 1990s. The disputes over the US intervention in Iraq are examined as a test both domestically and in foreign policy for the transatlantic partnership. The filmmakers reconstruct debates in Paris and Washington, show public reactions, and demonstrate how differences in security policy coexisted with shared interests in trade, research, and culture.

Accompanying the broadcasts, the program makers point to current commemorative formats in the anniversary year. The French Air Force has organized symbolic flyovers under the title “Liberté 250”; special illuminations and events are also planned in New York. In doing so, the producers foreground the question of how historical memory conveys diplomatic messages — and how the relationship might evolve under the conditions of a fragmented world order.

The film is explicitly not intended as a celebratory tribute. By juxtaposing gestures, conflicts, and cooperative projects, it aims to make visible the long arc of a partnership whose relevance ranges from defense policy to the cultural industries and which will again find public attention on July 4.
