Patrouille de France over New York: Ceremonial Flight for US Independence Celebration

New York – 01.07.2026: The Patrouille de France on 9 June 2026 with eight Alpha Jets overflew the Statue of Liberty – a visible kickoff of their US tour “Liberté 250”. The series of ceremonial flights along the East Coast is scheduled through 4 July, US Independence Day. The aim is to honor the anniversary of 250 years of American independence and to highlight the traditionally close relations between France and the United States. Media images show the flyover over Manhattan with smoke trails in blue, white and red.

Logistically, the squadron is supported by an A400M transport aircraft; the operational base is the Stewart Air National Guard Base north of New York. From there coordinated flights take place over symbolic locations, including West Point and Philadelphia. According to involved parties, the flights are closely coordinated with US authorities: temporary airspace restrictions, special clearances and precise slots in air traffic control apply for operations in densely populated airspace.

The choice of the Alpha Jet follows practical criteria of the aerobatic team. The type is considered stable in tight formation, relatively economical to operate and familiar to the pilots of the Patrouille down to the smallest detail. This allows closely timed flyover profiles to be flown with high precision – a requirement that demands special care over urban corridors like Manhattan. Observers also point to the symbolic level: France’s contribution to American independence in the 18th century and the long-standing exchanges in defense and security matters gain particular visibility through the presence in the sky over historic sites.

For the remaining days of the tour, further ceremonial flyovers along the East Coast are scheduled. According to official program items, another appearance in the New York area is planned for 4 July as the finale of the “Liberté 250” series. Accompanying the armed forces and local authorities publish information on viewing times and safety zones. The deployment joins a tradition of international display teams that appear at national commemorative events and thereby demonstrate technical precision, training standards and partnership ties.

The Patrouille de France is considered one of the oldest aerobatic teams worldwide. Their appearance in the USA underlines how military representation works beyond classical maneuvers: as public diplomacy that needs few words yet clearly makes a statement – in this case in the national colors over one of the best-known landmarks of the United States.
