The former Macé Beach officially changed its name to “Brigitte Bardot Beach” starting Monday. Cannes pays tribute to a woman who became a legend in the mid-1950s. In 1955, during the film festival, this young actress appeared on the beach wearing a patterned bikini, dancing barefoot in front of photographers, while changing the image of women’s freedom in European cinema. The actress became a myth, and Cannes? Became the stage for this myth.
This beach is just steps away from the Palais des Festivals, where every year the red carpet is rolled out, and the film industry holds its breath for almost two weeks. It is at this location that film and memory finally merge. At the unveiling ceremony, the city screened Louis Malle’s film Viva Maria! outdoors, free of charge and right by the water. It was a rather cinematic way to say goodbye.
Because Bardot passed away in December 2025, but her name still resonates in France like a melody from another era. For many, she remains a symbol of the French New Wave, even though she never fully embraced this movement. Others remember her as a woman who left the film industry early to devote herself completely to animal welfare. In France, just writing “BB” immediately makes everyone understand who is meant.

During the off-season, dogs will be allowed on the beach during specific hours. This may be a small decision, but it is symbolic.
