On the Croisette, the Mediterranean sparkles as always. Sunglasses reflect the palm trees, photographers await the next big event – and now one of the city’s most famous beaches bears the name of a figure connected to Cannes for decades: Brigitte Bardot.
The former Macé beach has officially been called “Plage Brigitte Bardot” since Monday. With this choice, Cannes pays tribute to a woman who here, in the mid-1950s, became a legend. In 1955, during the Film Festival, the young actress appeared in a floral bikini on the beach, danced barefoot in front of photographers, and in the process changed the image of female freedom in European cinema. From the actress, a myth was born. And Cannes? It became the stage of this myth.
The beach is located just a few steps from the Palais des Festivals, where every year the red carpet is rolled out and the film world holds its breath for almost two weeks. It is precisely in this place that cinema and memory finally merge. For the inauguration, the city screened Louis Malle’s film “Viva Maria!” outdoors, directly on the promenade – free of charge. A rather cinematic way to say goodbye.
Because Bardot died in December 2025. However, her name continues to resonate throughout France like a melody from another era. For many, she remains the face of the Nouvelle Vague, even though she was never fully part of that movement. Others remember the woman who left the world of cinema early to dedicate herself uncompromisingly to animal protection. In France, often the abbreviation “BB” is enough and everyone immediately knows who is being talked about.
The tribute therefore carries a second meaning. Cannes celebrates not only the actress but also the activist. Outside the summer season, at certain times, dogs will be allowed on the beach. A small decision perhaps, but with a strong symbolic value. Bardot fought for decades against cruelty to animals, the fur industry, and intensive farming. Friends described her as tenacious. Opponents saw her as troublesome. Probably both were true.
Of course, the figure of Brigitte Bardot remains complex.
Her subsequent political statements have always sparked heated debates. Several times she was prosecuted for controversial statements. In France, this ambivalence is now an integral part of the public memory of her. Icon and controversial figure at the same time – not everyone accepts this, especially in an era when cultural tributes are evaluated more carefully than in the past.
However, Cannes visibly chooses to celebrate the image of the young Bardot. That woman who once ran smiling along the Croisette and whose demeanor helped define the international image of French elegance. Cities like Cannes live off their stories, their photographs, the great images of cinema. Some of these images fade. Others remain like salt on the skin.
Brigitte Bardot belongs to the second category.
And now a stretch of the Mediterranean bears her name.
