Large fire in Canet-en-Roussillon: Campsites devastated, hundreds of accommodations destroyed

Canet-en-Roussillon – 04.07.2026: A fire that broke out on July 2 swept across large areas along the coast of the Pyrénées-Orientales within hours and caused heavy damage in Canet-en-Roussillon and the neighboring town of Sainte-Marie-la-Mer. Several campsites and parts of the Pôle nautique were affected; emergency services reported vegetation burning across hundreds of thousands of square meters. Winds at times drove the flames toward coastal areas where many holidaymakers were present.

According to the Préfecture, around 3,000 people were proactively evacuated from camping zones, residential areas and adjacent commercial zones. Rescue services treated several people with minor injuries, mostly due to smoke inhalation; six civilians and several firefighters received medical attention. Many holidaymakers had to leave their accommodations in haste and were taken in at municipal emergency shelters as well as sports and event halls. Volunteers and aid organizations distributed water, blankets and hygiene items.

The five-star campsite Le Brasilia was hit particularly hard. Authorities estimate the destruction there at hundreds of units; initial surveys indicate 281 bungalows are completely lost. Operators and local staff speak of massive losses for the current season. Adjacent mobile home sites also reported damaged plots, scorched infrastructure and destroyed utility lines. Many families face the question of how their booked stays can be continued or refunded.

The fire also reached the industrial and boatbuilding area at the Pôle nautique. The Catana Group’s shipyard site reported two destroyed buildings, including production lines. According to the operations command, a spread to larger industrial facilities could be prevented. Investigators from the Gendarmerie are examining the paths of spread and possible causes; at present there is no conclusive evidence of deliberate arson.

Several brigades of firefighters from the Pyrénées-Orientales and neighboring départements were deployed continuously, supported by water-bombing aircraft and helicopters. On the morning of July 3, authorities classified the fire as largely “contained”. Nevertheless, extinguishing operations and fire watches continue, since smoldering hotspots in the dry vegetation could flare up again. Access to the affected zone remains restricted for the time being to ensure safety and allow damage assessments.

Political representatives pledged support; the Préfecture is coordinating accommodation, clearing operations and initial aid payments together with the municipalities. Tourism businesses are advising on rebookings, and insurance teams are assessing damages. The administration has set up contact points for those affected to report losses and apply for emergency assistance. At the same time, authorities remind the public of safety precautions: avoid open fires, keep access routes clear for rescue services and report smoke immediately.
